Mountain rice-grass grows in somewhat open deciduous forests and woodlands and in coniferous woodlands on well-drained soil with organic matter on the surface. It grows in clumps and the attractive, deep green leaves over-winter on the ground layer. The flowering shoots start growing in early spring.
